Synopsis
Set in the early twentieth century American West, the film follows Robert Grainier, a quiet railroad laborer who spends his life building tracks through vast forests and mountains during the rapid expansion of the United States. Living a solitary existence shaped by hard work and fleeting moments of human connection, Robert experiences love, devastating loss, and the slow transformation of the wilderness around him. As industrial progress advances and the world modernizes, he becomes a witness to both the beauty and destruction brought by change. Through sparse dialogue and powerful imagery, the story reflects on solitude, memory, nature, and the passage of time in a life that might otherwise seem small but carries deep emotional weight. The film is based on Denis Johnson’s acclaimed novella of the same name.
